(About the work) Are we to believe the veil of truth covering up recent banking frauds, Stock values, “religious wars”; or shall we just consult the Tarot for guidance?  Reference to Sinclair Lewis quote: “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.”

Tsutsumu, concertina binding, (1/1).  Antique Japanese silk covers and Book Box covering.  Pen and ink drawings and notes, Japanese paper on-lays.  Japanese handmade papers.  Silk book cover and Clamshell box have tiny intaglio etching on-lays.  5” x 3.75” x 42” (open).  (My very first artist book made after reading “Tsutsumu: the Art of the Japanese Package.”) 1982-1984. In University of Alberta, Canada, Special Collections, Edmonton, CA.

 

Under African Skies, artist’s book and box, 1/1.  Full leather designer binding, hand-dyed goatskin with reliefs and painting.  Archival structure holds 11 hand-colored intaglio etchings (1/1).  Fore-edge drawings in pleats.  Elaborate clamshell box with vinyl and intaglio etching on-lays.  Words by Paul Simon, from Graceland album.  (Used w. permission.)  Simon awarded “Gershwin Prize for Popular Song” by Library of Congress in 2007.  Book won award in Cincinnati museum exhibit in 2005.
